Journey beyond the familiar tale of miraculous oil to uncover the gripping historical drama behind Judaism's Festival of Lights. In this lecture led by Rabbi George Wielichowski, we'll explore how Hanukkah emerged from an intense civil war between rival Jewish factions in Jerusalem, where the Tobiads and Oniads battled for control of the priesthood and Temple, leading to a complex struggle that ended with the Maccabean triumph and Temple restoration –– and, ironically, a holiday whose commemorative rituals look and feel weirdly un-Jewish. This story also presents a timely allegory relevant to our modern political dynamics and serves as both a celebration and a warning about the dangers of internal strife.
