What is Pop Art? How did the Pop Art movement start? Was it a challenge to other (older) types of art? Who are the main Pop Art artists? Is there still Pop Art today? All these questions and more will be explored in this lecture with Guri Stark covering the origins of the Pop Art movement in the UK and the US in the 1950s and its response to Abstract Expressionism and to consumerism and mass advertising in the western world. We will discuss the cultural impacts of the movement and its evolution from the 1950s to these days and showcase some of its main artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Paulin Boty, David Hockney, and all the way to modern Neo Pop Artists such as Jeff Koons, Evelyne Axell, and Julian Opie.
