Since 1945, hundreds of films have been made on the Holocaust. In addition to Oscar-winners like Schindler’s List and Life is Beautiful, scores of other films have chronicled diverse aspects of the Shoah. The number of existing films presents a challenge to anyone who might think of making a new Holocaust film. Are there still new things for filmmakers to say about the Holocaust, and new dimensions of the tragedy to show on screen? This talk will explore how filmmakers are finding new ways to treat the Holocaust and make it relevant to twenty-first century audiences. It will focus on recent French films about the Holocaust. Topics include athletes who died in concentration camps; how the Holocaust is relevant to students today; and the effects of the Holocaust on the second and third generations. Talk will include clips!
